It is very important to me, as a reputable breeder, to
educate people about the differences and dangers of backyard breeders, puppy
mills, “muttsforbucks” breeders, and purchasing from pet stores.
Reputable Breeder: A person who breeds to the standard of
the breed, breeds for the love of their chosen breed, breeds to improve the
breed, is involved with showing to conformation, assists with rescue, places
pets with spay/neuter contracts or limited registration, etc.
Backyard Breeder: A person who casually breeds purebred
dogs with little or no regard to the breed standard, genetically linked defects
or temperament.
Puppy Mill: A commercial operation in which purebred
puppies are produced in large numbers purely for profit.
MuttsForBucks Breeders: Those who purposely take two
different pure breeds to create a “mutt” for profit. Commonly referred to as
“designer breeds”. No regard is given to coat type, genetic testing, health,
temperament, etc.
Pet Stores: Virtually all pet store puppies come from
backyard breeders, puppy mills, muttsforbucks breeders, or disreputable
breeders.
You may be asking, “What can I do?”
It is IMPERATIVE that potential pet owners thoroughly
research the breed of puppy or dog they are interested in. It is vitally
important to find a reputable breeder that has a contract and health guarantee.
Reputable breeders take great care in placing their puppies or dogs into just
the right home.
Bottom line: If you have done your research and have
decided a purebred puppy or dog is right for you, find a reputable breeder.
PLEASE do NOT purchase from a backyard breeder, puppy mill, pet store, or
muttsforbucks breeder! In doing so, you are contributing to the cycle of
“supply and demand”. PLEASE visit your local shelter or contact a rescue.
There are many animals needing and deserving of caring and loving homes.
