HYPOGLYCEMIA
Hypoglycemia is a sudden drop in blood sugar and this can
trigger a seizure. It can also cause a pet to go into a coma, and if not treated
it can cause death. Hypoglycemia is very common in the Toy Breed, and also
occurs in adult hunting dogs after a long day in the field.
SYMPTOMS
Listlessness, depression, staggering gait, muscle weakness,
tremors.
PRECAUTIONS AND TREATMENT
Steps should be taken to make sure
Toy breed puppies do not get
chilled, tired, or stressed. Food needs to be with them at all times and should
be a Premium Dry food. Fresh water should be available at all times as well.
If your puppy exhibits any signs of Hypoglycemia I recommend
keeping Nutrical or White Karo syrup close at hand. If possible, it is
beneficial to give Nutrical to your puppy a couple of times a day. If your puppy
is unable to lick, or refuses, you will have to rub it on his/her gums. Contact
your veterinarian immediately if the puppy does not respond to the Nutrical or
Karo syrup.
